Homesickness while on an assignment is normal. If you’re like some people, the longer you’re away, the worse it gets. If you’re on a 13-week assignment, how can you cope with homesickness and prevent it from developing into overwhelming anxiety?

Keep in Touch

You can schedule time to text, call, e-mail, or video chat with your friends and family. Being able to hear a familiar voice or see your loved ones on a video chat can help you cope with homesickness. It also gives you a chance to tell them how you’re feeling and to receive encouragement from them to take full advantage of your assignment.

Stay Busy

A travel assignment provides a lot of opportunities outside of your work environment. Use your time to enjoy some activities that you might not otherwise have time for, including:
  • Sightseeing
  • Experiencing local culture and food
  • Enjoying local arts and entertainment
  • Taking an art, hobby, or language class, or an online class

Stay Active

Staying active can help you stay healthy. Enjoy a run or a walk, take a bike tour, or find other ways to get outdoors and exercise. Healthy exercise will raise your heart rate and release endorphins to improve your mood and help you feel better about yourself.

Add a Touch of Home to Your Accommodations

Personalize your accommodations. Adding a few items that make your place feel less like a hotel and more like home can help you relax and enjoy your surroundings. Some simple touches that can add warmth to your place include:
  • A favorite cup or mug
  • Fresh flowers
  • Inexpensive decorations for the kitchen or bathroom
  • Photos of friends, family members, or pets
  • Pillow or throws
  • Wall art

Reflect on the Benefits of Your Assignment

Why did you accept the assignment? It’s probably because you considered how it can benefit your career or your personal life. Remind yourself of those reasons, and remain confident that you made the right choice. Consider the many opportunities a travel assignment provides to:
  • Broaden your professional network
  • Challenge yourself
  • Receive diverse assignments
  • Have flexible schedules
  • Help patients in areas with a greater need
  • Learn new skills
  • Enjoy travel opportunities
