There were approximately 120,7000 respiratory therapist jobs in 2014. The majority of respiratory therapists work in hospitals, but some also work in physician offices and nursing care facilities. They may be on their feet for long periods of time and sometimes need to lift and turn disabled patients. Because they work in healthcare facilities that could be open during all hours, respiratory therapists may need to work evenings, weekends and holidays.

If you are thinking about pursuing a career as a respiratory therapist, you will typically need an associate’s degree, although you may want to consider a bachelor’s degree, which may be considered more valuable to employers. Currently, respiratory therapists need to be licensed in every state except Alaska. Licensing requirements vary by state. Degree courses usually include anatomy and physiology, chemistry, physics, microbiology, pharmacology and mathematics. Degree programs will also include supervised clinical experience.

Job growth for respiratory therapists is expected to be above average through 2024 at 12%. The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that the median wage for respiratory therapists was $58,670 in 2016. The median wage is the wage at which half the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less.
