Traveler Tips
Although medical technologist travel jobs can be exciting by allowing you the opportunity to experience new places, it’s very likely that you may have times in which you miss home. Being homesick is normal, but it doesn't have to take away the enjoyment of your travel assignments. Learn more about what you should do if you start to feel homesick.

Bring Something That Reminds You of Home

A preemptive move to combat homesickness before embarking on a travel assignment is to make it a point to pack items that remind you of home. Framed photographs, knickknacks, candles, or anything else that will help your housing more closely resemble your home can prevent you from feeling so far away.

Set Up Regular Check-Ins with Loved Ones

When you're feeling homesick, prioritize connecting with loved ones. Make them a constant presence during your travel assignment by setting up regular check-ins via Skype, FaceTime, or just a regular phone call or even writing an old-fashioned letter.

Explore Your New Surroundings

Take your mind off home by distracting yourself with all of the attractions your new surroundings have to offer. After work, make it a point to fully experience what your assignment city has to offer, and put your mind on collecting stories and mementos to take home, rather than just missing home.

Arrange a Visit

If possible, see if you can bring your family or friends out to visit you during your assignment. Having a weekend visit mid-way through your assignment gives you something to look forward to, and helps alleviate homesickness during the final stretch.

Make a Family Dinner

Even if you can't have your family sitting down at the table and eating alongside you, making a dinner that reminds you of home can be a helpful fix for homesickness. Not only does it get you busy, but food has a unique way of reconnecting you to experiences and can give you a taste (figuratively and literally) of home.

Focus on the Benefits

When worse comes to worse during your times of homesickness while out on assignment, reflect on why you are there. Focus on the benefits you are experiencing and why you chose to work a travel assignment. Reminding yourself of the positive aspects can help you power through the harder times.
