National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, also known as MLPW or simply Lab Week, occurs annually during the last full week of April to recognize medical laboratory professionals and their contributions to healthcare. Our laboratory professionals play an important role in clinical diagnostics, disease prevention and public health surveillance. They save lives by helping doctors accurately diagnose disease, and their impact on the protection of public health has perhaps never been more evident than in the weeks since the COVID-19 crisis began.
In 2018, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Division of Laboratory Systems (DLS) launched The League of Laboratory Superheroes to highlight how quality, safety, preparedness, data science and a well-trained workforce are essential elements of laboratory excellence. Lab Week 2020 occurs from April 19-25, and the CDC and DLS are encouraging medical laboratory professionals and their supporters to participate in spreading awareness of their vital role in healthcare. Their Lab Week Toolkit contains numerous educational and shareable resources, and they encourage others to join the conversation on social media using the hashtag #LabWeek.
