The power to get the career you want is in your hands. It’s not just about working hard and waiting to be rewarded for your effort - career progression also requires being strategic in order to transform larger looming goals into a reality. Align your actions with your career goals in 2017 by following these steps.

Flesh Out Your Vision

Don't put pressure on yourself to nail down a concrete goal right away. Let your imagination run wild regarding where you see yourself in 2017. It doesn't have to be cohesive. Write down all the details of your vision, such as: what you'd like to do at work; how you want to feel; what type of environment you want to be in; what specialty you’d be interested in; etc.

Fill in the Gaps

After you know what result you want to achieve, drill down what you need in order to get there. Are there additional credentials you need to earn or skills you need to gain more experience in? Determine how far your current qualifications are from those needed to make your goal more plausible and list out what's needed to fill in the gaps.

Develop a Comprehensive Plan

Every larger goal is really just a series of small steps. Narrow down more refined, sub-goals within your main goals. This will help benchmark your progress along the way. For example, if you want to earn a particular credential to switch medical roles, sub-goals may include: finding a course in your area, submitting the application, and completing the coursework.

Commit to the Process

When you're in the midst of your day-to-day work in the healthcare field, it can be difficult to prioritize working on your long-term career goals when it seems like finalizing your travel assignment plans or other more urgent items require all your focus. If you want your actions to truly align with your goals, you have to commit to the process. Schedule time on a consistent basis to devote to pursuing your goals and treat it as non-negotiable.
